Hertz Super Cover is an optional added insurance which waives liability for local excesses that would otherwise be charged in the case of damage to the vehicle or its theft. It normally (there are some variations depending on location) includes accessory cover, except in the case of Sat Navs and broken / lost keys. Supercover has limitations on cover for damage to the tyres, wheels, glass (including chipped windscreens, lights and mirrors), the roof or underbody of the car. It does not cover misfuelling.
You can check the price of Hertz Supercover by running a dummy car hire hire quotation on the Hertz website and indicate you want your car hire to buy online. Having selected your vehicle watch out for a link 'View optional items not included in the price'. This will show you the price online. As a guide the SuperCover rate to cover the for a seven day hire of a Opel Crossland hired at Munich Airport from the 6th November 2023 was £359.98 for the week. SuperCover can only be purchased by those over 25.
People do sometimes opt for the Hertz cover as it saves the hassle of having to submit an insurance claim. On the other hand others prefer to buy standalone excess insurance, primarily on the basis of the significant cost saving.
Guide prices for similar insurance from the MoneyMaxim car hire insurance service would be around £14 for a week's hire in Europe, or under £40 annually. We suggest you run a quotation for your rental period, and they can weigh up which is your preferred way forward.
One good feature of the Hertz website is that if you search under locations you can find out the potential excesses payable at each location for each car - look out for the Rental Qualification and Requirements link and then select Collision Damage Waiver from the drop down list. This is something we wish other car hire companies would copy as it does bring clarity to the situation. It is important though to look at your specific rental conditions. The excess on a car rented at Bologna airport could be €4000 for damage and theft claims, and the cost of excess protection tops €79 per day! (as at 17/10/2023).
To weigh up the pros and cons of each way of protecting yourself from a considerable bill we suggest comparing car hire insurance prices with MoneyMaxim and then making a considered judgement.
