Driving in Luxembourg

Dipped headlights should be used when daytime visibility is reduced to 100m or less. Sidelights should be used when parking on roads without street lighting.

The drink drive limit is lower than the UK's at 0.05% compared with 0.08% and young drivers have even lower limits so bear this in mind if you are enjoying a meal out and want to drive home.

Zone de rencontre signs signify pedestrian friendly areas where the speed limit is 20 km/h and pedestrians have right of way.

Car Hire - Local Conditions

Beware "Winterisation" fees. All cars driving in winter conditions must be fitted with winter tyres. Though it would be reasonable to expect this to be included, some surprisingly big names add it as an extra. Avis make a mandatory additional charge of around €11.00 per day excluding tax (for up to 10 days) for winter tyres from Findel airport for example. You may find different rates for the same supplier via brokers. Booking an Avis car through Auto Europe costs the same amount but the winter tyres were optional and were a more reasonable €5.00 per day.

Car hire excess amounts vary but €850 to €1,300 is typical for a compact vehicle and the excess can be double that or more for a premium car. These excesses can easily be covered by car hire excess insurance for much less than the optional insurances or waivers available at the desk.

Most rental firms work with fair fuel policies where you pick up the car with a full tank and return it with a full tank so you just have to pay for the fuel you use. You may be offered the option of paying for a tank of fuel and returning the car empty. This is convenient as you don't have to worry about refuelling just before returning the car but is normally more costly as you have to pay their refuelling rate and you're bound to leave some fuel in the tank.

Most rental agreements will allow you to take the car out of Luxembourg to other European countries but there are some restrictions so read the rental condition terms if you want to take the car cross border.
