Within Europe, National will normally include Collision Damage Waiver, Theft Protection and Liability cover for European renters - this might differ for visitors from further afield.
Their excesses differ from country to country as often National cars are supplied by one of their sister brands and each of these brands can supply vehicles with different excesses to other brands. France and the UK are now both served by Enterprise. However in Italy, for instance, National say 'The maximum excess will vary depending on the vehicle you are renting, please ask at time of rental for further information on which excess applies'.
Here you can find more details of Enterprise policies, but if you require further information on National protection policies we suggest you contact them directly.
One advantage of taking a policy from a rental firm is that it means any claim for damage is dealt with at the desk as you return the car, negating the need to pay the cost up front and claim it back from a third party insurer. On the other side of the coin the cost differential tends to be substantial compared with buying an independent excess policy.
So you can decide which is your preferred way forward - run an excess insurance enquiry through the MoneyMaxim car hire insurance service (you will find policies from around £2 per day) and you will be able to decide the best option for you.
